Fundraising as civil action

Sunday Service is a once a month volunteer initiative that investigates environmental justice by beautifying the community of Austin block by block. Cleaning up visible trash while sharing how to cultivate and utilize visual literacy and low-fi materials to re-imagine the neighborhood.

What we quickly found is that within a day, trash would begin to pile back up because there are very few public trash bins on the block as opposed to other communities where there is a bin on every street.

We realize that how we treat spaces is indicative to how we treat people. The question soon became,

how do we utilize our skills to give our neighbors the tools to beautify their community?

We challenged our Designer-in-Residence Ebere Agwuncha, to envision a public trash bin from repurposed materials that would allow long term beautification of our community.

Sunday Service will now be a monthly workforce development initiative where we will teach you how to build the alt_ [b.in] and then together we will install them, block by block till every block that needs a bin, has a bin. Sunday Service will create public installations while teaching woodworking skills and design free to the community and our volunteers. Ultimately, we need jobs, and we deserve safe spaces. Thats exactly what will will build, together.
